“ Type and image are containers for meaning and the expression of human experience. Both type and image contain room for interpretation by the reader, although reading a photograph is very different from reading a text. It is through manipulation of form (type and image) that designers create and construct an organized system for content in the service of communicating a message. ”
Your group will design a poster promoting a performance based on one of the five vowels: A E I O or U. The vowel will be assigned, but the performance will be determined by the group. Concept should be informed by the history of the letter form and by the nature of the performance; be sure to do additional research on both as well as visual research for letter forms and performance posters.

My partner Ashlin and I were assigned the vowel “ i ” to work with. We learned that the history of the letter is quite extensive. To start, the letter “ i ” is descended from the Semitic consonant yod and the Greek vowel iota. “Many scholars claim that in the ancient Phoenician language, yod was the word for ‘hand.’” (we decided to use this in our final design seen above). Other inspirations were tied to the letter
” i “ having a historical significance with the divine.
Both Ashlin and I are very passionate about music and landed on the idea of a House DJ set in Chicago. We decided on Chicago since it is the birthplace of House music and we searched for real venues to host this event and found The Listening Room. We added BYOB as an event detail to add more tertiary text to the poster.
The quote featured on the left side of the poster is from the iconic Frankie Knuckles. Knuckles is credited as one of the founding fathers of House music and referenced the Warehouse, the main founding location of House music, as “Church for people who have fallen from grace”. With these ideas in mind we finalized our design with our own interpretation of the event, describing it as: “experience eternity. the sacred sound. the holy house.”
